Making Salt Dough Ornaments

We had a great time making salt dough ornaments this weekend. It's an easy project to do, and children love it!

The finished ornaments make beautiful, one of a kind presents for friends and family during the holiday season.

First we made the dough with the following recipe: 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 1/2 cups water. The dough should be stiff, but not sticky. Add more flour and/or water as needed to create a good consistency.

The kids helped roll out the dough, and then we cut out shapes with cookie cutters.

Don't forget to put a hole at the top of your "cookies" before baking. Bake for about 1 hour at 250ºF/125ºC. You may need to flip them midway so that they stay flat while baking.

After the cookies have cooled, you can paint them with tempera or watercolors.

After the paint was dry, I added a coat of clear acrylic varnish to seal and a golden thread for hanging.

Unique, handmade, personal presents for everyone on your list - especially the grandparents, aunts and uncles in your family will adore these. I hope you have fun with this, and I'd love to see your results too!

I remember making these with my mom when I was a kid. What a nice memory you brought back to me with this post. :)

These are really fun and easy - and cheap to do - with the materials that you already have at home :)

I'm so glad you are enjoying remembering - and making - the ornaments.

Hey Jacqueline, that's great - and you are my jewelry guru, btw - I want to see the ornaments your boys made!

Hey Dana,

Don't give up! This is the second year we've made the ornaments, and they were much better this year :)
