This weekend we watched "Mary Poppins" on DVD with the kids for the first time, and we were reminded of how revolutionary this film was for its day. The choreography for the "chimney sweep" sequence was especially amazing - do you remember this part? My husband works in set design for film and television, which made us appreciate the immense amount of work that went into producing a movie on this scale.
What does this have to do with chocolate chip scones? Nothing really, except that I was joking yesterday that I would like to have Mary Poppins fly over and babysit my children for a couple of days, and I would be more than happy to give her all the tea and scones she could eat in return!
So perhaps these will entice you Mary Poppins, wherever you are, to drop in for a visit!
Here's my quick, simple, and not too sweet recipe:
Chocolate Chip Scones
2 cups flour
3 Tbsp. brown sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
pinch of salt
6 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
1 egg
7 oz. or about 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped chocolate
(I used a combination of milk and semi-sweet chocolates)
Preheat oven to 375ºF / 190ºC. Grease or line a baking sheet.
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Add butter to flour mixture and blend until it has the appearance of coarse meal. Mix together milk and egg, and then add to dry ingredients all at once. Blend just until all ingredients are moistened. Fold in chopped chocolate.
With floured hands, form a ball with the dough. On a floured working surface, press dough into a circle about 8 - 9 inches (20 cm) in diameter. With a sharp knife, divide the dough into 8 pieces - cutting it like a cake. Carefully lift the pieces onto your prepared baking sheet, and bake for about 18 minutes or until lightly golden. Let the scones cool for 5-10 minutes before devouring.
My family is always in favor of serving hot muffins and scones with fresh butter, so if you can ignore the calories, why not!
Enjoy!
p.s. : Thanks to Jillian for the post about my artwork yesterday on her lovely blog here, and don't miss her beautiful artisan jewlery shop here.

Have they remade the film, I watched it as a child and I am ancient! I even had some music from the film on an ep record!
I too wish Mary Poppins would swing by with her umbrella and sing 'a spoon full of sugar' to my boys, especially when they get sick!
I bet your girls will love 'Sound of Music' too when they get a little older!

My boys and I LOVED Mary Poppins! It truly is a classic - don't you love that really good movies don't go out of style?
